Very well maintained 1986 Westfalia with Automatic transmission with minor cosmetic upgrades to keep the original design, but major mechanical upgrades including Subaru converted engine. Assembled in Germany, with limited edition interior upholstery color for late Vanagons. Currently does not run and will need to be towed. See GoWesty review below for more details. Detailed service history of van available. Experian AutoCheck score of 58 out of 58. Plenty of additional images available upon request.
GoWesty Review of this Vanagon:
"This is a very nice example of the only year/model Vanagon full camper of the later variety (86-91) that came
with a tan interior. This makes this camper a one-year-only example. This one is in excellent, all-original physical
condition making it an excellent restoration candidate, or one that can continue to be used as-is. It has many
popular upgrades, including the Subaru engine conversion. Although there is currently a problem with the
engine, this being a very common conversion means the problem is solvable—the worst case being the need for
the engine long block to be replaced or rebuilt."
This two-owner van was purchased used by the current owner in 1988 with 38,072 miles on the odometer. Since
that time, it has been garaged and maintained by the same family in the Pacific Northwest.
The van has been regularly maintained and service records are available. Current mileage 304,952.
The exterior of this van is in good condition with no major dents or damage. There are a couple of small dents
near the rear left corner and near the rear license plate. There is a crack in the windshield and another in the
driver’s side blinker cover. The interior is in almost completely original condition with no major upgrades or additions. The carpeting is being protected by rubber mats in the front and the cabin. The upholstery is very clean with only minor wear and tear consistent with age. All the camper equipment is in excellent working condition. The pop-top has been replaced with an acrylic 3-window tent. Mechanically, the transmission was replaced in 2017. The van has been outfitted with stainless steel coolant pipes and a new exhaust kit. In 2008, the engine was converted to a Subaru pulled from a 2006 Forester. Until late 2018/early 2019 the Vanagon has always been in excellent running condition. Currently, the van will turn on and idle well, but begins to overheat after a few miles.
