1989 VW Vanagon Syncro Adventurewagon TDI for sale
1989 Vanagon Syncro Adventurewagon TDI,
Purchased van from the original owner in 2013, who purchased it new from Ed Anderson of Adventurewagon in Fort Brag, CA, back in 1989.
no rust anywhere on the vehicle. With no accident history, the body looks as close to perfect as any Vanagon I have seen.
The body has around 160k original miles on it.
The interior is excellent in excellent condition
The original Adventurewagon teak cabinetry and trim is likewise in excellent shape.
The high top Adventurewagon was designed by Ed Anderson using a wind tunnel. A six-foot tall person can stand upright inside the van. It has an upper, expandable bunk, good for two kids to sleep in. There is a generous amount of storage space in a cabinet, built into the hard top, above the front driver/front passenger area. The lower bed folds out and can sleep two adults. A nice skylight and side windows in the high top provide plenty of light.
There is also a sink cabinet with a stainless steel sink and water tank, and gray water holding tank. The stove and fridge cabinet I have removed for more space in the van. This cabinet is included with the van, incase one wants to reinstall it. The van has its original propane tank and plumbing. Go Westy makes an upgraded, modern propane tank kit, which is recommended to replace the old one.
I have had the following upgrades done:
Full, electronic TDI conversion done, see details below
New bushings and ball joints and bearings in the suspension
All new brakes, stainless steel brake lines, and Go Westy’s big front disc brake kit
Fox adjustable shocks all around
South African grill and headlight upgrade
Electric winch cables and 2 inch receiver hitches installed front and rear, with trailer lighting and electric brake controller installed
LED lighting inside and out
Go Westy 16 inch alloy wheels and Perilli “Scorpion” tires, including the spare wheel and tire, are like new
Matt Garner Metal Works in Idaho completed the following work on the van, in June of 2014:
Complete, electronic TDI conversion done, using the engine from a 2002 Jetta TDI sedan with 115k miles on it. This is the highest quality, TDI conversion I have ever seen. The features are too numerous to list here. The build sheet for this conversion, which itemizes every part involved, is seven pages long. A few highlights – completely rebuilt transaxle by German Transaxle of Bend, Oregon, a new heavy duty clutch and pressure plate, upgraded turbo with custom intercooler, gages for turbo boost, exhaust gas temperature, oil temp, oil pressure, water temperature. Cruse control, and a fully functioning OBD II port for the TDI computer.
Matt Garner custom aluminum bumpers, and rubberized protective coating on lower body panels
Matt Garner swing away spare tire holder and accessory carrying tray on rear bumper
Modern AC system with controller/evaporator unit from Vintage Air, all other AC parts are VW Vanagon and Jetta parts. New AC compressor with R-34a coolant.
All service records are included.
I typically get 30 mpg on the road unloaded, and 24 mpg fully loaded. Runs excellent on regular Diesel or Biodiesel. The van has awesome torque and power with the TDI. It is a pleasure to drive
This TDI Vanagon is legally registered in CA as a diesel vehicle, with no smog inspection required.
The van has been appraised by two independent appraisers, at $70k.
Given this information, I will consider a reasonable offer.
