A well-maintained "Westy" keeps going up in price for a reason: a product of German engineering and design, it was built to last. The one I am offering is a good example of this legendary breed.

The 4-speed, manual, 2.1L engine was rebuilt by the Buslab in Berkeley, CA in 2005, when I bought it. It has plenty of power for short- and long-haul trips, and gets an average of 17 mpg. Since I've owned it, my Westy has been regularly serviced by a knowledgeable mechanic who specializes in VWs. I have all the service records.

✔ New paint job in original "Assuan Brown" (milk chocolate) color in 2010. Looks terrific ... she turns heads!!

✔ Approx. 74,000 miles on rebuilt 2.1L engine

✔ Just had a major tune up

✔ New battery

✔ New catalytic converter

✔ New skylight seal/weatherproofing

✔ AM/FM radio/CD

✔ Fog lights

✔ Snap-on bug screen for hatch-back rear door

✔ All original tables

✔ Clean, clean, clean throughout

✔ Non-smoker - no pets

✔ Passed Calif. smog test, Sept. 2017

✔ Calif. registration valid until Jan. 2018

The mileage is higher than the 196,xxx miles shown in the dashboard photo. That's because the odometer stopped working for a while before I had it replaced. The actual mileage is closer to 221,xxx.

I just had a complete pre-sale inspection done and spent $1,700 to ensure that my Westy is road-worthy and market-ready. I consciously chose not to repair or replace several of the recommended -- but not urgent -- items.

For example, the windshield has a small hair-line crack in it. It was like that when I bought it and has not been an issue. A new windshield and installation costs $350. Another example, new tires are recommended. I will credit $500 for these.

In other words, I will leave it to the new owner to decide which remaining items he/she wants to have done. I will, however, credit the estimated $1300 to have all the items repaired or replaced.

I've seen similar-vintage Westys selling for $30K, $40K, and more. If well-maintained, these rare examples of auto excellence will continue to appreciate in value.

It has been a pleasure to wave at other Westy enthusiasts on the road or that I've met at campgrounds and "Burning Van" reunions. And now it's an honor to pass on a quality vehicle to a new owner. Get ready to tour and make your own Westy memories!

Thanks for looking.
